Noella Koshul
I hold a degree in comparative religious studies, as well as certification in both grief and bereavement studies, and end-of-life doula training.
For the past fourteen years I have dedicated much of my time to promoting death education in my home city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada - working to change the way communities respond to the needs of the dying and bereaved. I have been a strong advocate for, and provider of compassionate, knowledge-based, non-medical support to both grievers and to individuals at the end of life.
Grief is a completely natural and healthy human response to loss; it is not something to be ashamed of. However, our reluctance to engage each other in frank discussions where dying, death, and bereavement are concerned, means that grief is often misunderstood by both grievers and those that surround them. For many, grief can be an overwhelming, confusing and isolating experience. It doesn’t have to be this way.
My approach is to offer information, tools, and the gentle encouragement that will empower individuals to deal directly with their loss, honoring the uniqueness of the relationship.
All sessions are completely confidential, and offered in the convenience and comfort of your own home.
As an end-of-life doula my role is to provide appropriate and personalized emotional and informational support to individuals (and their families), who are living with a terminal illness, such that the living until death experience is as peaceful, natural, dignified, and rich with meaning as possible.
I am often asked what that might look like in practice, and the answer is that it depends.
I am not engaged by individuals or families to run the show; my purpose is to support in a way that allows the people I journey alongside to maximize their autonomy, and have as good a death experience as possible, however they define that.
Some examples of the services I provide are: offering support (practical or emotional) to individuals or their loved ones; providing respite for caregivers; facilitating conversations regarding decisions and choices that must be dealt with at the end of life (e.g. substitute decision-makers and DNRs); being a point of contact for other services or care providers; practicing advocacy when choices/wishes need to be honored; introducing the notion of legacy building...
Where there is a service that I cannot offer, I will always attempt to connect clients to another resource.
Ultimately, my hope is that each human being whom I work with feels safe, cared for and listened to.
